First (Real) 10-Miler

BroadStreetRun.jpgI ran the Philadelphia Blue Cross Broad Street Run this morning in 1:39:39 - my best run to date! I was so happy that I broke through the 10-minute mile I've been running steadily for some time now - it's great to be (barely) in the 9's - woo hoo!  It was a beautiful day - started out a little hazy and then the sun broke through right as I was at mile 9. There were over 20,000 people there, and I finished in the top 2/3 of my age class. Next year, I will do better. For now, I am nursing two toenails that are about to say au revoir to their respective toes. Disgusting, I know, but well-earned and I'm (freakishly) proud of them. ;-) Will post a pic once they're up (of me at the finish line - not my missing toenails). :-)

Stacia,

Congrats on your Broad Street Run! I am trying to get back into running shape myself (my last effort as 34:59 in a 5K). Any training tips you'd like to share?

Regards
Tom

Hi Tom - Congrats on your 5k time! I've boiled training down to a few helpful tips:
- Consistency: You must run at least 4 times per week
- Equipment: Big lesson here! Go get fitted for proper running shoes. I learned the hard way.
- Know your stats: Running with a GPS or iPod sensor can be a great way to get immediate feedback about your run. I tend to get addicted to the numbers, but this is very helpful.Knowing that I can run 5 miles without my heart rate going above a certain number is helpful in training.
- Set weekly mileage goals.
- Push yourself. Our bodies acclimate quickly to what we're doing. Shake it up with a few tempo runs, sprints, and just some nice lazy slow runs.
- Get a product owner. :-)
- I'm no pro, but these things work for me. I hope to get accepted to NYC in November, but we'll see how it goes.
Keep us updated on how you're doing! It's almost summer - time to enjoy the nice weather! Happy trails.

Hi Stacia

Thanks for the tips! My goal is to train enough to eventually complete a half marathon and untimately a full marathon. I'm going to work up to it gradually, perhaps being able to compete in the Philadelphia Distance Run in September.

Good luck with your training for the NYC! That will be a great accomplishment WHEN you complete it.
