Characteristics of an Agile Project Manager

Agile Project Manager, ScrumMaster. Tomato, to-mah-to.

What this does mean is the embracing of certain traits and characteristics. What does it mean to be a project manager or scrummaster for agile/scrum teams? What do you need to be good at?

1. Introspects and courageously deals with the bitter truth
2. Allows the team to self-manage and adapt their processes empirically
3. Leads by serving (props to Greenleaf here)
4. Possesses self awareness (to a fault)
5. Partners with managers for the good of the team (is able to transcend the role debate)
6. Relinquishes the inner task master
7. Facilitates collaboration (does not try to command or control it)
8. Removes impediments

While many of you are thinking "doesn't a good project manager do these things anyway?" The answer is probably 'yes'. However, an agile project manager/scrummaster focuses on these things FIRST. These are the skills/traits that she tries to develop above all else. Reports, charts, metrics, etc., are easy in comparison and anyone can learn how to do that stuff.
