Goin' it alone

I have had many experiences lately with teams who chose to implement agile independent of any help from coaches or leaders. This has resulted in many misrepresentations of what agile really is, along with many frustrated teams. What are your experiences with 'going it alone?' Have you been successful? If not, what would you have done differently?
